If GM wants to further boost Buick in the US, this is one way to do so.
For years, Europe has had the privilege of having access to some really wicked hot hatches. Fortunately, automakers like Ford and GM have gotten wind that Americans are also interested in this segment, hence the Focus ST and Fiesta ST. But GM still doesn't have a direct competitor for the former in the US yet, and the Vauxhall Astra would fit that slot perfectly. Thing is, it's a Vauxhall, a UK-only brand. But the Astra VXR is still a GM product, and there's been a growing relationship between Buick and Opel/Astra lately.
Yes, the Buick Verano is built on the same platform as the Astra. Point being, a hot hatch like the Astra VXR is totally possible stateside. With 279 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque on hand, the Astra VXR is more powerful than the Focus ST, which has 250 ponies, and it has a top speed of 155 mph.
