Video: 2013 Lexus GS Sedan Going Diesel

/ Comments

A diesel engine for the Lexus GS sedan is scheduled to arrive in 2013.

Lexus is trying to keep pace with German rivals in the sedan market. The upcoming Lexus GS is set to receive a four-cylinder diesel engine to compete with the Mercedes-Benz E-class and the BMW 5-series. Toyota execs are quoted as saying to Autocar UK that they want to "broaden the appeal of the brand and make it more accessible; and we certainly haven't given up on diesel." Lexus believes the gasoline-electric hybrids will continue to play a huge role in their array of vehicles.

Currently there is only one diesel-powered Lexus on the streets of Britain, the IS. Its 2.2-liter diesel motor puts out 148hp. Lexus has planned for the IS a next generation model soon, with a new, more powerful and efficient diesel engine in the works. Check out the video below to see the GS sedan in action (but only in action, as there is no audio).

The gasoline-powered Lexus GS will come to the UK in June 2012. The range will feature a 3.5-liter gas-electric hybrid and a smaller 2.5-liter V6. Both versions of the Lexus GS, the diesel and hybrid, will debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show this September. Photos displayed are of the 2011 Lexus LF-Gh Concept.
