Vintage Mercedes G-Wagon Upgraded With Modern Luxury

Tuning / Comments

For the first time, this ex-military Mercedes G-Class restomod can be fitted with an automatic transmission.

Since the launch of the all-new Mercedes G-Class, restomods based on the original G Wagon have boomed in popularity. Expedition Motor Company specializes in reviving ex-military Wolf models; specifically, 1990-1993 250GD two-door models distinguished with fold-down windshields and convertible tops.

While the G-Class is renowned for its off-road capability, Expedition Motor Company has made the ex-military G-Wagon more comfortable for city driving. For the first time, Expedition's custom G-Wagon can be fitted with a five-speed automatic transmission and an original gear-shift lever from an S-Class for a smoother, quieter ride. This new automatic transmission is paired with a 2.5-liter five-cylinder diesel engine.

"Without a doubt, our new Vesuvio Grey Wolf presents something fresh for fans of the vintage G-Wagen. Our newest build presents the cleanest application of an automatic transmission to the classic Wolf design ever completed," said Expedition Motor Company Founder Alex Levin. "Most of our clients tend to drive our manual Wolf trucks casually around town as well as use them for light trail running and beach combing. The new automatic series of Wolf models from Expedition Motor Company allows for more convenience driving our trucks in city and traffic conditions. The new automatic model also provides a great option for drivers not familiar with driving stick. We're absolutely thrilled with how this new truck turned out."

Like the company's other custom G-Wagons, the SUV is stripped down to its bare components as part of the extensive restoration. For the exterior, Expedition Motor Company painted the G-Class in a rare rare Vesuvio Grey color. To improve the ride comfort, new springs and shocks were installed, and the brake calipers have been upgraded with new rotors and drums.

Inside, the cabin is fitted with dark brown vinyl-covered seats and a modern entertainment system with Bluetooth support. In total, it took more than 1,000 hours to transform this ex-military G-Wagon into a modern luxury urban SUV.

You can upgrade an existing Mercedes 250GD restoration with Expedition's upgraded automatic transmission for an extra $7,500, or this newly restored example is on sale for $117,500.
