Inspired by the Atlas Basecamp off-road concept.
After presenting the new 2021 Volkswagen Atlas facelift at the 2020 Chicago Auto Show earlier this year, VW has launched a new range of accessories that give the popular midsize SUV a rugged new look while also enhancing its off-road capability. Available individually or as a set in the Basecamp styling package, VW's new Basecamp accessory line includes custom body cladding elements that create a more rugged overland look, while unique off-road-inspired wheels and all-terrain tires improve the versatility.
If these upgrades look familiar, that's because VW's new accessory line is inspired by the off-road-focused Volkswagen Atlas Basecamp concept that debuted at the 2019 New York Auto Show.
"Our goal is to provide customers with an extensive catalog of accessory options that cater to their desires for distinctive styling and functionality," said Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy at Volkswagen of America. "The public interest and customer enthusiasm sparked by the Atlas Basecamp concept created a strong business case to further explore off-road-themed components for production."
Produced by AirDesign, the Basecamp styling package includes a two-tone satin, silver and textured anthracite front bumper guard, textured anthracite fender flares with integrated splash guards, satin silver side door rocker panels, and satin silver rear valance with trailer hitch access. Unique Basecamp badges have also been added to the front quarter-panel. However, VW doesn't recommend applying the styling package to Atlas models that aren't equipped with a trailer hitch; it's also incompatible with the R-Line trim.
To improve the SUV's off-road capability, the Basecamp accessory line also includes unique 17-inch Traverse MX wheels produced by fifteen52 that were first seen on the Atlas Basecamp concept. The unique 17-inch wheels are finished in either frosted graphite and radiant silver and can be complemented with chunky 245/70R17 all-terrain tires.
The new accessory line for the Atlas doesn't come as a surprise as trademark filings discovered earlier this year already suggested VW was planning to build a production version of the Atlas Basecamp concept. Pricing details haven't been confirmed, but VW's new Basecamp Accessory line will be available this spring.
