Now we wait for its electric replacement.
We've known for quite some time that the current Volkswagen Beetle wasn't long for this world. VW confirmed that the Beetle would be discontinued after the current generation, with no immediate plans for a successor. There have been rumors that the Beetle could return as a rear-wheel-drive electric car, but nothing has been confirmed officially. Today, Volkswagen has announced the end of the current generation Beetle with two final special edition models called the Final Edition SE and Final Edition SEL.
Both models will be available in coupe and convertible body styles with a few special colors. VW is paying homage 2003 Última Edición (last edition) models, which were only available in two colors—beige and light blue. The new Final Edition models will be available in a unique color called Safari Uni (a recreation of the New Beetle's Harvest Moon Beige) and Stonewashed Blue (an homage to the Beetle Demin Edition from 2016). Other available colors include Pure White, Deep Black Pearl, and Platinum Grey.
All Final Editon models will be given some unique touches on the exterior including chrome treatments, body-color side mirrors, heated washer nozzles, and a sunroof. Final Edition SEL models are equipped with Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, and fog lights. In addition, Final Edition models will replace the typical “Turbo” badge on the tailgate with a “Beetle” badge. The SE and SEL trims will also be differentiated by their wheels. SE models feature 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with a 15-spoke design, while SEL models are fitted with 18-inch white aluminum-alloy wheels.
Inside, all Final Editions are equipped with keyless entry, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, stainless steel pedal caps, automatic climate control, and three-color ambient lighting. SE models feature cloth seats with leatherette, while SEL models receive diamond-stiched leather. Both are powered by a 2.0-liter engine sending 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque to a six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2019 Beetle Final Edition coupe starts at $23,045 for SE models or $25,995 for SEL models, while the Beetle Convertible Final Edition starts at $27,295 for SE models and $29,995 for SEL models.
