Now that Volkswagen has introduced a new Golf, it's only a matter of time before the performance-oriented versions come along. Yesterday we brought you initial details of the next Golf R, but before that hits the road, VW will roll out a new GTI. And here are the first images, leaked online courtesy of automotive leak-meister Vince Burlapp. The new Golf GTI is expected to use the same 2.0-liter turbo four as the outgoing model, but retuned from 200 horsepower up to a more prodigious 230.

Expect power to be channeled to the front wheels (all-wheel drive is reserved for the Golf R) through either a manual or DSG transmission, with both three- and five-door versions to be offered. A diesel GTD version will follow, and could actually make it to the US this time.
