Ever heard of Jamie Orr? If you're a Volkswagen fanatic keen on aftermarket modifications, you'll likely have come across the name at some point. He's a journalist, vehicle importer, event organizer, show judge, and much more, and all that passion for cars is centered around VWs. As a result, VW itself regularly asks him what to do when they want to create something cool. A couple of years ago, we saw Jamie's Jetta at SEMA but this year has been especially busy. Jamie added his touch to the last-generation Tiguan and then built a Golf R-powered Atlas concept for the automaker too. Now, he's turned his attention to the latest Golf GTI, and it's pure retro porn. Meet the Volkswagen GT BBS Concept.

The inspiration for the new Golf is an enthusiast-built Mk2 GTI that is very well-known in aftermarket circles. Sean Maynard, Enthusiast and Motorsport Marketing Specialist for Volkswagen, says that he saw the Mk2 at a show in 2019 and was "drawn to the simplicity and strength of the build". He met its owner, Brock Bickford, and after hearing that Brock built the car with his young daughter, got "a deeper appreciation for the VW enthusiast community."

Jamie Orr was approached as usual and explains the build: "We wanted to maintain the soul of the Mk8, so we went with more traditional modifications. But we left the interior, body, and powertrain exactly as it (sic) came from the factory. Take those wingback seats, with this striking red design - they are just phenomenal. Changing any of that would have been a shame."

Maynard explains that they try to focus on exterior modifications and leave the cabins alone so that those who may not have any experience with the brand can still get "a true feel for the vehicles." It makes sense, and the subtle mods are effective too. BBS Super RS wheels in 19x9-inch sizing are wrapped in Delinte rubber while H&R coilovers bring the car closer to the ground. Orr wanted a bit more camber adjustment, so he redesigned the front struts with a mix of other H&R components. A Borla exhaust was also fitted, the first of its kind for the new GTI, and the theme was completed with BBS retro red and black vintage livery with pinstriping from front to back. We still think the original looks the best, but this Mk8 is spectacular too. What's next, Mr. Orr?
