We recently reported the new mid-size SUV that Volkswagen is planning on launching will likely be called the Atlas, but that's still not set in stone. The automaker just released a video titled "Volkswagen Midsize SUV Origins, Chapter 1: Background." In this video, Volkswagen of America's product manager, Jim Birch, and Hinrich J. Woebcken, CEO of Volkswagen's North American Region explain the need for this new SUV and why it should be well-received by the American market.

With the video being called "Chapter 1," there should be more to follow, but it's not clear if any will surface before the planned October 27th reveal of the SUV.

In the video we see some amazing views of the American wild, places that adventurers and adrenaline junkies would kill to spend time at. It's this terrain that Volkswagen envisions buyers of this new mid-size SUV to have as their playground, hence the need for a rough and rugged seven-seater full of functionality that will completely conform to the needs of such a lifestyle. Dr. Elmar Licharz, the product line manager for the upcoming SUV said: "The CrossBlue Concept gave us quite good feedback, nevertheless we changed this car to be bigger and bolder for what the US customer expects." There are a few glimpses of the SUV's details, but we'll have to wait for the official reveal to see more.
