Volkswagen Releases Polo R WRC

Limited Edition

To mark Volkswagen's entry into the World Raly Championship, it has released this limited-edition hot hatch with 220 horsepower.

With 180 horsepower on tap, the Volkswagen Polo GTI is no slouch. But if you want the full rally experience, this is the one you'll want: the new Polo R WRC. Previewed in concept form back in May, the Polo R WRC street version has now been released in limited numbers to coincide with Volkswagen's foray next year into the World Rally Championship. It gets a 2.0-liter turbo four driving 220 horsepower to through a six-speed manual (no DSG here) to all four wheels for a 6.4-second 0-62 time and a 150 mph top speed.

To give the Polo R WRC the visual bark to back up the TSI engine's bite, Volkswagen has given it a full aero kit, 18-inch alloys and a white paintjob with blue and grey stripes - a racing livery to mimic the actual rally-going model's. Inside there's also an Alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, aluminum pedals and other special touches. Only 2,500 examples will be offered, each priced at €33,900 (in Germany) and none of them likely to come to the US market. But if there's enough demand and VW's new WRC program generates enough enthusiasm, it wouldn't be hard to imagine the German automaker making the Polo R a regular part of its line-up.
