Say goodbye forever to road trip pit stops.
This is one of those vehicles that we really wish was sold in the US. Volkswagen is set to unveil a production version of its 2017 California XXL concept camper van at the 2018 Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf, Germany late next month. The automaker has released a few teaser sketches of the production-spec model, which is based on the T6 van that's not sold stateside. We've also included additional images of the California XXL concept for your viewing pleasure.
Volkswagen has said that not only will the production version offer a full working kitchen and "sleeping units," but also a bathroom with a shower and toilet are part of the package. You'll never have to make a road trip bathroom pit stop again. Styling wise, the California camper van can be had with single or two-tone exterior paintwork, while the interior offers bright colors and many other practical solutions for living on the road. The first Volkswagen California was launched back in 1988 and was based on the third generation "Bulli" van. Today the sixth generation is on sale and VW recently celebrated the vehicle's 30th anniversary.
It also reached a 100,000 unit production milestone. No word yet on pricing, but the VW T6 van – before camper van modifications – starts off at around $25,000. However, VW previously calculated the T6 California would cost about $110,000 if it were sold in the US.
