Twenty years ago, the Volkswagen Touareg debuted. Since then, the SUV has, by and large, become the VW SUV. Since being replaced here in the US by the Volkswagen Atlas, the model has lived on just about anywhere that doesn't have a Star-Spangled Banner, still sharing underpinnings with luxurious and sporty SUVs like the Porsche Cayenne and Lamborghini Urus. In celebration of two decades of existence, Volkswagen has released this: the Touareg Edition 20.

In its 20-year run, Volkswagen has sold more than a million Touareg models. Along the way, there have been some far more special models than this. The Touareg V10 TDI immediately springs to mind, being an anomaly and a Dakar Rally hero. While the new Edition 20 certainly doesn't have a V10 under the hood, it does get some special touches to commemorate the occasion, both in and out.

On the outside, the Edition 20 is finished in what VW calls "Meloe Blue." It's a killer shade slightly reminiscent of BMW's Carbon Schwartz Metallic - black until the light hits it just right, then blue. There are also 20-inch all-black Bogota wheels, exclusive to the Edition 20. Rounding out the exterior changes are gloss black wheel arches, accompanied by a diffuser in the same color.

Inside, the Edition 20 gets standard leather, which features diamond stitching in contrasting beige, and special illuminated treadplates with "Edition 20" logos. Elsewhere, there's red stitching and piping throughout. Things inside are topped off by an Edition 20 badge stamped into the leather on the gear selector.

While the Touareg might be gone in the US, this one makes us miss it a little. There's nothing wrong with the Atlas, mind you. The Atlas is a rather good SUV and serves as a solid replacement for what was once VW's global halo SUV offering.

Our pining is motivated purely by nostalgia for VW's first SUV, specifically the V10 TDI. That one will always have a special place in our hearts simply because of how ridiculous it was. In a world dominated by uber-fast SUVs, the Touareg was one of the first to try it out. And for that, we've at least got to give the Touareg some credit.

If you're one of those that still has some love for the Touareg, as recently as January this year, dealers were still selling the Touareg, albeit for rather ungodly values.
