Volvo C40 And XC40 Recharge Get More Range, Improved Charging, And New RWD Variants

Electric Vehicles / Comments

It's the first time the Swedish automaker is offering RWD in 25 years.

Volvo has announced a series of updates for the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge models, which now promise more performance, increased range, and, for the first time in a quarter-century, the availability of a rear-wheel-drive Volvo.

These improvements have been achieved by fitting the respective ranges with in-house developed electric motors that drive the rear axles. A pair of RWD variants replace the front-wheel drive models (not available in the US) and should offer adequate performance based on the provided figures.

The Standard Range has 235 horsepower that comes courtesy of the rear-mounted electric motor. That's a healthy increase compared to the outgoing FWD version, which produced 228 hp. Interestingly, the same 69 kWh battery pack has been carried over to the rear-wheel-drive model, but enhancements in cooling efficiency deliver an improved driving range.

Volvo says the Standard Range XC40 Recharge RWD is capable of traveling 240 miles on the EPA cycle, while the sleeker C40 Recharge can achieve an additional five miles. Those requiring more range (and power) will probably find the Extended Range RWD models more appealing.

Thanks to a larger 82 kWh battery, the maximum driving range is boosted to 270 and 275 miles for the XC40 and C40 Recharge models, respectively. With 248 horses on tap, these should prove sprightly enough for most individuals. Volvo notes both variants of both models need 7.4 seconds to reach 62 mph, but the Extended Range derivatives may feel a little livelier in the real world.

Charging times have also been reduced. When plugged into a 130 kW DC charger, a C40 Recharge Standard Range with RWD needs just 34 minutes to top up the batteries from 10-80%. In the Extended Range model, the battery can now charge at 200 kW, with a 10-80% charge taking 28 minutes.

"These updates are another big step in our work towards becoming a fully electric car maker by 2030," said the automaker's Chief Operating Officer, Javier Varela. "Range and charging times are new key factors for more and more of our customers, and these improvements make our fully electric models even more attractive than they already were."

The AWD model soldiers on but gains a few tweaks. The old setup comprised a pair of 201-hp electric motors (situated on the front and rear axles) that provided a total of 402 hp. Now, the XC40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD receives Volvo's own rear-mounted permanent magnet e-motor (245 hp) and a new asynchronous electric motor (157 hp) at the front. As such, the total output remains unchanged.

Of course, the AWD Recharge lineup also benefits from an improved travel range. Volvo claims up to 315 miles (WLTP) in the C40 and around 311 miles in the XC40 Recharge Twin Motor. EPA figures are currently unavailable, but we anticipate they will be released shortly. Before the updates, this model was rated at 223 miles.

Lastly, a new 19-inch wheel design will be offered. Not only will it enhance the style of your electric Volvo, but it's been designed to reduce drag and conserve range thanks to clever aerodynamics. Nothing else has changed, but that's no surprise, as the Swedish automaker recently updated the XC40 Recharge to match the C40 Recharge.

Based on the fact that EPA figures were provided, we expect the RWD models to be introduced very soon. Pricing will follow at a later date.
