Volvo Has A New Way To Cure Range Anxiety

Volvo's latest update also increases the range of the XC40 Recharge.

Right now, the Volvo XC40 Recharge is the only fully electric car in the Swedish automaker's lineup, but this will soon change with the upcoming C40 Recharge. Volvo's first dedicated EV recently started production, but that doesn't mean Volvo will stop improving the original XC40 Recharge.

On a single charge, the XC40 Recharge will cover up to 208 miles before running out of juice. This falls short of the Tesla Model Y, which has a range of up to 326 miles, and Mustang Mach-E (up to 305 miles). Thankfully, a new over-the-air software update increases the range of the XC40 Recharge thanks to improvements in battery management and regeneration performance.

A smarter timer also pre-conditions the batteries. Volvo hasn't revealed how much further the electric SUV will travel on a single charge, but according to the EPA the updated 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge has an increased range of 223 miles so it still has less range than the Model Y and Mustang Mach-E.

As well as an improved range, the new software update adds a new Range Assistant app to help eliminate range anxiety. Integrated into the XC40 Recharge's Android-powered infotainment system, the Range Assistant app gives an accurate estimate for the remaining driving range and displays the real-time energy consumption. It also offers advice on how to adjust your driving style to optimize the electric SUV's range.

For longer trips, the app's range optimizer can automatically adjust the climate control settings to improve the range. "Through in-house development of software and over-the-air updates, we can constantly improve our cars and make sure that your electric Volvo stays fresh," said Sanela Ibrovic, head of connected experience at Volvo Cars. "The Range Assistant app is a great example of how quick development and deployment of new features can improve the Volvo customer experience every day."

Volvo has already started rolling out the latest software update and expects to update every XC40 Recharge by the end of October. The Volvo C40 Recharge will come pre-installed with the update.
