Volvo Unveils All-New XC90 SUV

Second-gen seven-seat SUV rides on all-new platform and comes powered by new suite of engines.

The all-new Volvo XC90 has been unveiled ahead of its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October. Having launched back in 2002, the second-generation large premium SUV has taken its time to arrive, but does so billed as one of the most high-tech, economical SUVs on the market and “the beginning of a new chapter in Volvo’s history.” Longer, taller and lower than the outgoing model, the XC90 adheres to the Chinese-owned carmaker’s new design language, adopting styling cues from the Volvo Coupe Concept and Concept XC.

The chrome-trimmed grille is a new signature design trait that will be rolled out on future Volvos, as will the T-shaped LED DRLs. Inside, a tablet-like touchscreen is joined by wood and leather trim, a crystal-glass gear lever, and diamond-cut design starter button and volume controls. Adopting Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), the SUV’s new lighter, stronger platform will underpin a new portfolio of Volvo models, and in the new XC90 offers significantly more passenger space for those in the second and third rows. Using the firm’s new family of Drive-E engines, new gasoline and diesel units will all be 2.0-liter four-pots, topped by a 390-hp Twin Engine plug-in hybrid model carrying the T8 badge.

Here, a supercharged and turbocharged gasoline engine will power the front wheels and an 80-hp electric motor will drive the rear wheels. Volvo will launch the XC90 with a First Edition limited to 1927 individually numbered cars marking the year Volvo was founded. Available exclusively online starting from £68,785, the First Edition XC90 can be ordered with two powerplants. The super- and turbocharged T6 comes with 320 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque; the twin-turbo D5 diesel with 225 hp and 346 lb-ft. Both come mated to an eight-speed automatic, and feature an onyx black exterior, 21-inch eight-spoke alloys, a nappa leather amber interior, and every available option included.

Being a Volvo, the XC90 comes with two world first safety features. A run-off road protection system tightens seatbelts and activates energy-absorbing tech in the seats when challenging terrain is detected, while an auto-braking feature cuts in if the driver pulls out into oncoming traffic. Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but is expected to start at around £40,000.
