Not so long ago, there was a rumor going around claiming that Volkswagen was very close to approving the Beetle Dune concept for production. First introduced at the Detroit Auto Show last January, the Dune concept paid tribute to the original Beetle Baja sand racers. With its 50-mm raised body, 19-inch wheels, 210 horsepower, and a more all-terrain look, the Dune concept was well received.

And now VW, in a sort of sneaky sort of way, has confirmed that this new Beetle variant is on its way to production.

The UK's Car magazine has also confirmed the news, but VW also released a short video showcasing the car stating that "starting in 2016 you'll see more of these on the road." And that's VW's announcement right there. No official word yet on pricing, but expect it to be a bit more expensive than the regular Beetle hatchback. The concept was powered by a 2.0-liter turbo four, and we're willing to bet the production version will be as well.
