Just as the sun gets ready to set on the Mk 7 Volkswagen Golf GTI, the folks at mountune52 have concocted an effectual power upgrade package that puts the factory 288-horsepower Golf R to shame. Aptly named "Stage 2+", the upgrade package takes the Mk 7 GTI all the way up to 380 horsepower from its stock 228 - an absurd, almost-unheard-of 67-percent increase in peak output.

That's met with a peak torque rating of 376 lb-ft, which represents a 118-lb-ft gain. The result of all this is a 5.2-second sprint to 60 mph, and probably enough torque steer to rip the wheel right out of your hands.

The centerpiece of the mountune52 Stage 2+ package for the GTI is the same IS38 turbocharger that's found on the factory VW Golf R, as well as an mTune handset with a custom engine calibration to take full advantage of the new hardware. Additional goodies included with the package are a new gauge display, an adjustable shift light, a datalogger, and a fault-code reader.

Customers with dual-clutch automatic transmissions also have the option of a revised transmission control unit calibration, cooked up by mountune52 to compliment the Stage 2+'s elevated output.

"This latest upgrade for the Golf GTI, showcases not only our performance expertise but also the continued broadening of the mountune52 product catalogue," says mountune and mountune52 Director Alec Pell-Johnson. "The Golf GTI is an incredibly popular car with a huge community of enthusiasts always striving to take the performance of the car to the next level and we believe that the STAGE 2+ power upgrade does just that."

Pricing for the mountune52 Stage 2+ upgrade here in the US is currently unknown, but across the pond, it's very reasonably priced at £2,099 in the UK - the equivalent of about $2,600 US. That's astonishingly affordable given the inclusion of a brand new turbocharger, and if you needed yet another reason to give the outgoing Mk 7 Golf GTI a look, this might be it.
