It was only a few days ago that we brought you a report claiming the next-generation Volkswagen Golf R will have an output close to 300 horsepower. And even with its all-wheel-drive system, its total weight will only hover around 200 lbs. heavier than the new GTI. If proven accurate, the new Golf R will be quite a performance package for those looking for an AWD turbo hot hatch. And now our spy photographers have just sent us images of a Golf R test mule out doing some test laps at the famed Nurburgring.

This prototype is wearing GTI badges on its front fenders, but a few tell-tale signs indicate this is something even more potent. First off, the prototype pictured here has big front air intakes on both sides. In addition, there are quad exhaust pipes out back, which was only rumored a few days ago and it looks like we can now confirm their presence. VW remains mum on official specs, but more details will continue leaking out as we get closer to the 2014 Volkswagen Golf R's premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
