By blending the appeal of the California with the Caravelle's distinct practicality, Volkswagen has brought to the UK a campervan that is sure to be well received by Brits that enjoy nothing more than going on driving vacations. The California Beach accommodates seven, with 2- and 3-seat rear benches and a choice of individual chairs available. Front seats swivel to face the rear where a portable table can be accessed from the sliding lateral door; two folding seats are stored in the tailgate.

Up to four people can sleep in the Beach as the bench seat folds nicely away to form a two-berth bed across the vehicle's width whilst the manual pop-up roof allows access to a pop-up bed. Privacy is guaranteed courtesy of the pull-down blinds for the rear and side windows and pop-up covers for the front window. Multiple versions of the 2.0-liter TDI engine feature in the engine range; the most noteworthy being the 114hp BlueMotion Technology model, which includes a set of eco features such as cruise control, longer gearing, brake regeneration, a stop/start system and low rolling resistance tires.

Optional extras that will impress both driver and camper alike include large alloys, a 32-liter cool/warm box, programmable parking heater, privacy glass, an awning, double glazing, xenon headlights, Bluetooth mobile phone provision, satnav and LED daytime running lights. Entry-level models start from £34,970 and we feel they are going to be well received across the pond.
