The last we heard any updates regarding this beast of all hot hatches was last April. Since then, nothing. Nada. Let's just say that Volkswagen has had a much bigger problem on its hands. It's called Dieselgate, and that scandal has very likely delayed the launch of various new products, and it appears the production version of that insane Golf R400 Concept is one of them. But have no worries, hot hatch enthusiasts, VW still fully intends to build it, according to a new report coming from German publication Autobild.

N/A

If all goes to plan, a facelifted Golf will debut this March and not long after that the R400 will be revealed. Apparently, however, VW is still deciding what'll be under its hood. The choices are narrowed down to two: either a more powerful version of the Golf R's turbocharged 2.0-liter four banger, or the turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder found in the Audi RS3. Whichever one is ultimately chosen, output is now said to be at least 420 hp, instead of the original 400 ponies. The reason for the boost is the recently upgraded Mercedes A45 AMG, which now has around 380 hp. Like the Golf R, expect the R400 (or R420?) to feature all-wheel drive. And yes, this is going to be a very limited edition model.
