VW Taos Basecamp Concept Shows Tough Side Of Small SUV

Concept / Comments

The concept previews some of the accessories that will be offered for the Taos.

The new Volkswagen Taos will be hitting US showrooms soon and it's expected to be a big hit. It will be VW's most affordable SUV in North America and is a solid option for those not ready to transition to the fully electric ID.4 or customers lamenting the fact that more affordable versions of the new Golf 8 won't be sold here.

However, what the Taos is not is a true off-roader or a rugged adventure vehicle - but maybe it can be. VW has just taken the covers off the Taos Basecamp Concept, which the brand says hints at a future accessories package. This new concept makes its debut this week between May 20 and 23 in Helen, Georgia.

VW says that the positive response to the 2019 Atlas Basecamp Concept inspired the creation of a similar one for the smaller Taos. The Taos Basecamp Concept certainly looks like it's ready to play. Finished in distinctive blue paint with gloss black contrasting elements, the look is beefed up by extras like all-terrain wheels wrapped in chunkier rubber and prominent fender flares. Orange accents adorn the mirror caps, side decals, and the unique Basecamp badging. Those tires are Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail items while a Thule Canyon XT roof basket means you can bring all your gear with you.

VW says that the upcoming Taos Basecamp styling package that you'll actually be able to buy includes the fender flares, lower door skid plates, and bespoke badging.

"The Taos is a great compact SUV from the start," said Reto Brun, Director of VW's design center in California. "Following the design strategy we established with the 2019 Atlas Basecamp Concept, the Taos Basecamp Concept is refinished in Waimea blue paint with gloss black trim elements and a matte black hood and roof."

Inside, this Taos Basecamp Concept gets a custom cargo divider for easy storage of sporting equipment. It also becomes the first VW to debut the new Gentex HomeLink Bluetooth-enabled frameless mirror that includes a built-in compass. The regular Taos has a refined, classy interior that should be one of the most comfortable in the segment. When it arrives, the Taos will start at an MSRP of $22,995.
