We may just be living in the greatest era for hot hatchbacks. Obviously there's the currently on sale Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen Golf GTI, but both of those automakers have even more extreme hot hatches in the works. There's the Ford Focus RS, due in 2016. And now we're receiving a report claiming that VW will build a production version of its Golf R400 concept. It will be even more hard-core than the new Golf R.

Also set to debut in 2016, the AWD R400 will receive the familiar turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that powers both the GTI and R. Only this time it'll be upgraded to produce an insane 395 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed dual-clutch will come as standard fare. Perhaps it's best to think of the R400 as VW's response to the Mercedes A45 AMG. Performance wise, expect a 0-62 time of only 3.9 seconds (1 second faster than the Gold R) and a top speed of 174 mph. It'll have a total weight of around 3,130 lbs, thanks to liberal doses of carbon fiber. Styling wise, the R400 likely won't differ all that much to the concept, such as those enhanced front and rear wheel arches. Expect a sticker price of around $40,000.
