Jeremy Clarkson would never do this.
Top Gear returned to UK TV screens last week. In the first episode of season 28, Chris Harris tore up the Top Gear test track in an Ariel Atom 4. There was also a cheap car challenge where hosts Chris Harris, Paddy McGuinness, and Freddie Flintoff were tasked with buying a used convertible for less than £500 ($650). But then the episode culminated in one of the show's craziest stunts yet.
An Ariel Atom 4 will do 0-62 mph in just 2.8 seconds. But Chris Harris wanted to see if this could be beaten in an underpowered Rover Metro. How? By bungee jumping the car off the 500-foot Luzzone dam in Switzerland. With Flintoff still in the driver's seat.
As the car is suspended high over the dam, Flintoff looks genuinely terrified as he waits for the car to be dropped over edge. You probably would be too, especially when you're not even in control of your fate. "This is one of the most horrific things I've ever done," he says nervously.
As the car plummets to the ground at high speed, it falls upside down, which looks terrifying. This was clearly a very dangerous stunt, but all the necessary safety precautions were taken. Fortunately, nothing went wrong and Flintoff was unharmed apart from a few painful-looking marks caused by the harness.
It's a truly spectacular stunt and one nerve-racking piece of television. There's even an amusing jab at Jeremy Clarkson: "I can't see Jeremy Clarkson doing this," Flintoff joked. Richard Hammond probably would, though.
Flintoff is already earning a reputation as the fearless, accident-prone daredevil of the trio. In the last season, he crashed a custom-made electric Subaru. In the current season, we'll also see him crash a motorized trike. Top Gear season 28 is currently airing in the UK, but a US start date hasn't been announced yet. Judging from past seasons, it should air on BBC America a few months after the UK. In future episodes, we'll see the Porsche Taycan get sideways and the McLaren Speedtail race a fighter jet.
