This was always going to end in disaster.
If you need a reminder of why street racing is idiotic and dangerous, you just need to watch this video. As reported by CBS Miami, two teenagers in Florida, Miami, thought it would be a good idea to stage a drag race on a residential street, putting many lives at risk. Of course, it ended in disaster, as the outcome was captured on video. But while most street racing accidents involve high-performance sports cars and supercars, in this case, the speeding teenager was behind the wheel of a Lexus RX crossover.
A video taken from a homeowner's CCTV footage shows the two cars casually driving down the street. Moments later, both cars can be seen speeding side by side in a drag race.
Unfortunately, they didn't pick a very suitable road to stage a drag race because it isn't wide enough for the two cars. As a result, the Lexus RX is forced onto the grass and swerves to avoid a mailbox since this is a public road instead of a race track.
This causes the rear of the SUV to slide out, but the driver is unable to regain control and drives over an elevated driveway, which acts as a ramp that causes the crossover to go flying into the air. The Lexus RX then slams onto the ground and flips over several times.
Miraculously, both teenagers survived despite the severity of the crash, which is hard to believe when you look at the damage as the roof is completely caved in down to the doors. According to the report, the driver of the Lexus was treated in hospital for broken ribs but is expected to make a full recovery. It's also extremely fortunate that no bystanders were caught up in the crash.
While the Lexus RX isn't renowned for its performance, it has a high safety rating luckily for the teenage driver, having earned a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. It's a testament to modern car safety tech and engineering that anyone was able to survive this horrific crash.
