WATCH: All Ford Mustang Coyote V8 Generations Compared On The Dyno

Video / 6 Comments

It has been 12 years since Ford introduced the Coyote engine to the pony car.

Ford unveiled the seventh-gen Mustang with the latest fourth-gen Coyote V8. With the engine now spanning 12 years since the first came out in the fifth-generation pony car, it would be interesting to see the improvements the development team at Ford delivered to the power unit.

Justin from AmericanMuscle Mustang got a hold of all four Coyote engine generations for testing on the dyno. To note, every engine ran in 93 octane, and Justin pulled in the gear before the 1:1 ratio.

The Coyote Gen 1 (2011 to 2012) made 412 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. It was bumped for the Mustang's 2013 to 2014 model year to 420 hp with the same torque value. On the dyno, Justin saw performance figures of 364 hp and 349 lb-ft of torque at the wheels.

Ford introduced the Gen 2 for the 2015 to 2017 model years, which had 435 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. The power bump was made possible by improved internals such as stronger rods. As expected, the dyno run saw higher numbers over the Gen 1 at 388 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque.

But that wasn't the case for the Gen 3 (2018 to 2023), at least for the torque value that dropped on the dyno. While the engine produced 460 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque at the crank, the test returned 402 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque.

The latest Gen 4 comes with revised exhaust and intake manifolds for better airflow, delivering 480 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. On the dyno, the S650-generation Mustang's Coyote returned 410 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, another drop in torque value, but Justin said something could be wrong with the test device.

Based on Justin's dyno testing, the latest iteration boasts 46 more hp at the wheels over the Gen 1. If the number does not satisfy you, wait until we see Justin get his hands on the Mustang GTD, a road-going version of the Mustang GT3 with 800 hp at the crank.
