This 2023 Honda Civic Type R prototype gets pushed hard at the Nurburgring.

After unveiling the new sporty Civic Si, Honda is wasting no time putting the new hardcore Type R through its paces. Following last month's official teaser, Honda has been spied testing prototypes of the new Civic Type R before production begins. A few weeks ago, video footage emerged showing the new Civic Type R cruising the streets. Now, we finally get to see Honda's new hot hatch in full attack mode. For the first time, a video posted by CarSpyMedia shows the new Civic Type R getting a proper workout at the Nurburgring.

Honda was caught testing not one but two Civic Type R prototypes, with one wrapped in traditional white camouflage and the other wearing the same colorful red camo shown in Honda's official teaser images.

The test driver pushes the Civic Type R to its limits, weaving around the track to test the car's agility, and you can hear the tires squealing at practically every corner. Bravely, the test driver barely slows down for the small carousel, briefly lifting the left rear wheel into the air.

Since it's being pushed harder, the new Civic Type R sounds more aggressive than what we heard in the last video, but the soundtrack is more sedate than we hoped. The same can be said for the styling. Compared to the current model, the new Civic Type R looks relatively restrained, sporting a smaller rear spoiler.

That said, it still looks noticeably more aggressive than the regular 11th generation Civic thanks to its wider fenders, prominent front air vents, and a central exhaust system with three tailpipes. Under the hood, the new Civic Type R is expected to retain its predecessor's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine.

However, this unit will likely get a power boost up to around 320-340 horsepower. We don't know the exact date yet, but Honda has confirmed the new Civic Type R will break cover next year and go on sale for the 2023 model year.
