Turns out rear-wheel drive and a wet track isn't a good recipe for a drag race. Who would have thought it?
As drag races go, this one is rather unusual: Archie Hamilton Racing decided to pit the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio sedan against the Mercedes-AMG A45 hot hatch. Normally, this would be a forgone conclusion. The Alfa has 503 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to sprint from 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds. That’s faster than a standard A45 which only has 381 hp. However, this A45 was modified to produce a respectable 450 hp, and has the advantage of having all-wheel drive.
The Mercedes-AMG A45 was modified by racing driver and YouTuber Archie Hamilton, who went down the aftermarket tuning route. Unfortunately for the rear-wheel drive Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio, the drag race took place on a very wet track – from a standing start, it never stood a chance against the all-wheel drive A45.
Using launch control, the A45 rockets off the line at blistering speed and annihilates the Alfa. With over 500 horsepower being sent to the rear wheels, the wild Alfa predictably struggles to gain traction in the slippery conditions. It soon starts to close the gap, but it’s not enough to beat the A45 across the line. Don’t worry, though – our favorite Alfa soon redeems itself when the two drivers engage in a rolling start race. Unsurprisingly, the result is also rather different when the same drag race is repeated in dry conditions.
