The C8 Corvette managed keep pace with much pricier supercars.
Production of the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray may have been cut short, but YouTuber Speed Phenom was lucky enough to take delivery of the new mid-engine sports car without any setbacks. Back in April, he wasted no time taking the new C8 Corvette to the track. While being put through its paces at Willow Springs, the C8 Corvette was able to keep and eventually overtake a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, which is considerably more expensive. With a starting price of $58,900, the C8 Corvette's value for money cannot be understated.
With the track-focused Z51 package installed and race mode activated, the YouTuber decided to take the new Corvette Stingray for a spin at another track day, this time at Laguna Seca.
The C8 Corvette still managed to keep its pace against much pricier exotic supercars, including a Ford GT, Bugatti Chiron, and McLaren P1, and even some thoroughbred race cars such as a Ferrari 488 GT3, Ford Mustang GT4, and Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo. But you don't need to spend millions of dollars to have fun at a track day, as the C8 Corvette proves.
With barely any other cars on the track during his first lap, Speed Phenom was able to push hard and set a best lap time of one minute and 38 seconds, a lap record for the C8 Corvette at Laguna Seca. It's also impressive considering the car also had to cope with 95-degree heat. It never overheated, unlike several Corvette Z06s that overheated after just a few laps during the same session, a notorious problem for the Z06.
The track day wasn't without incident, however, as a driver lost control of a Ferrari 488 GT3 and veered off track, damaging the front end. Speed Phanom praised the C8 Corvette for how smoothly it performed throughout the track day and the balance the mid-engine platform provides. He also experienced no understeer, which gave him the confidence to push it harder.
After lapping it around Laguna Seca, Speed Phenom concluded that the new Corvette Stingray is "the ultimate track weapon," but noted that it could be improved if it had more downforce at the front and rear end to improve the cornering speed. Just imagine what the C8 Corvette would be capable of if it had more power, larger tires, and bigger brakes. Luckily, we'll find out when the new Corvette Z06 arrives.
