The Toyota Yaris GR is one of the coolest hot hatchbacks we've seen in a long time. It's essentially a homologated, street-legal version of the new Yaris WRC rally car that packs the most powerful 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine ever fitted to a production car, generating a whopping 257 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque.

With a curb weight of just 2,822 pounds, the GR Yaris will accelerate to 62 mph from a standstill in under 5.5 seconds and max out at 143 mph. Combine that with a six-speed manual gearbox and all-wheel drive, and you have the perfect recipe for a hot hatchback.

Sadly, Toyota isn't planning to sell the GR Yaris in America, but enthusiasts are hoping an online petition will persuade the Japanese automaker to change its mind. And just to make us more jealous, Toyota is cooking up an even hotter GR Yaris.

Toyota has been caught testing a new hardcore Yaris GRMN at the Nurburgring. With a professional racing driver behind the wheel, the hardcore hatchback was pushed hard at the Green Hell. Compared to the GR Yaris, the new GRMN version is fitted with even more extreme aero parts including a large rear wing, new winglets on the front bumper, and prominent air outlets on the front fenders.

These modifications will improve the car's aerodynamic performance significantly. The black roof could also be camouflaging a carbon fiber roof that will make the compact hot hatchback even lighter. With less weight and stiffer and lower sports suspension, the hardcore GRMN variant should be even more fun to drive than the regular GR Yaris.

We'll have to wait and see if Toyota increases the power output, but the GR Yaris isn't exactly underpowered. The performance modifications should also lower the sprint time by a few tenths of a second. Toyota hasn't announced any official details yet, but the Yaris GRMN could debut sometime next year.
