The BMW 2 Series is one of the brand's most loved models, especially among driving enthusiasts who appreciate its compact dimensions, rear-wheel-drive layout, and taught chassis. BMW fans have been patiently waiting for the all-new car, and while spy shots have revealed its basic shape and leaked images have shown us glimpses, it is still not exactly known what the car will end up looking like. Some spy pics of the interior have also been leaked, so the puzzle is slowly coming together, and now a new video showing the new car lapping the Nürburgring has everyone talking once more. The good news is that the new car will not share the FWD architecture of the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

In a YouTube video posted by Automotive Mike, the next-gen car can be seen lapping the Green Hell in full camouflage. This makes it difficult to identify key design elements, but it is abundantly clear that the new car will have different dimensions, most notably in the front where it gets a longer sweeping hood. The sloping shoulders and angular bodywork also hints at a different, but evolutionary new look. The good news is that the front-end does not look like that of the controversial new 4 Series, and more closely resembles the BMW X2 SUV than anything else, but gets an aggressive front bumper design and model-specific taillights.

The new 2 Series will not abide by the current trend in downsizing and turning to a front-wheel-drive layout, this accordion to BMW's project manager for the 2 Series Gran Coupe, Gernot Stuhl. "There will be a successor that will be on a rear-wheel-drive platform. So customers who want and need a new 2 Series Coupe will find that in our line-up, as well as those who want a six-cylinder engine." Fans of the 2 Series can expect to see a wide range of engines for the international market, including a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo petrol, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged-four will be a possibility for the M235i, but the famous inline-six will be reserved for the hardcore M2 Coupe which is expected to make around 420 horsepower.
