Just in the nick of time.
Some 88,000 residents of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada have been evacuated in the wake of the ongoing wildfires. Twenty percent of homes have been destroyed, turning the town into charcoal. More than 1,110 firefighters are struggling to gain control of the wildfires, with some progress being made, but the ordeal is far from over. Escaping the encroaching wildfires, however, was an ordeal in its own right. This dash cam footage, taken by a resident fleeing Fort McMurray in the nick of time, is without question one of the most harrowing things we’ve seen.
Despite having some 145 helicopters, 138 pieces of heavy equipment and 22 air tankers at firefighters’ disposal, the 49 wildfires cover an area roughly the size of New York City. Escaping the inferno wasn’t easy.
