This is what happens when trailer truck drivers ignore wind warnings.
We've seen some harrowing accidents captured by dash cams over the years, but this is one of the scariest yet. A parked patrol car captured the scene of a trailer truck getting caught in a severe gust of wind, causing it to tip over and crush a nearby cop car, while narrowly avoiding slamming into the camera car. Luckily, no one was inside the crushed cop car. According to EastIdahoNews, the accident occurred on the I-80 near Elk Mountain where gusts of wind were said to be around 70 mph when the crash happened.
"Our troopers were already in the same area working on two other semi-trucks that had blown off the interstate," a Highway Patrol officer at the scene said.
"Fortunately, nobody was in the police car or it would have been a lot worse." The driver and passenger of the truck also escaped unhurt. However, the accident could have been avoided altogether if wind warning had been heeded. Warnings had apparently been in place at the location for nearly two weeks, but were still being ignored by truck drivers. We're seeing less and less compliance from these trucking companies when these wind advisories are out," the officer commented. "They're in a hurry and taking chances and it's dangerous." Still, one consolation is that the video is getting widespread attention on Wyoming Highway Patrol's Facebook page.
At the time of writing, it had over six million views which should hopefully highlight the dangers."All we ask is that you please follow high wind advisories and closures when you are traveling in our great state…even if you plan to travel at reduced speeds," the Facebook post says. "Hopefully this video illustrates why."
