Before starting up Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk developed and sold two software companies: Zip2 and, of course, PayPal. Even before the latter was sold to eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion, Musk earned $22 million from the sale of Zip2 in 1995. And, surprisingly, it took Musk until 1999 to buy what many of us would have purchased the moment the money was available: a McLaren F1. Musk even had a film crew present the morning his F1 was delivered.

Amazingly, Musk made his fortune rather quickly and only three years after arriving in Silicon Valley did he buy his dream car. At the very least he could have bought a suit that wasn't so baggy. Then again, it was the 90s.
