The Midnight Idol. Mr. Las Vegas. Mr. Entertainment. No, we're not talking about the upcoming Mercedes-AMG SL. We're referring to the one and only Wayne Newton; an American singer and actor, and Las Vegas legend. Mr. Newton's former estate, Casa de Shenandoah is known to have housed a large number of highly collectible vehicles, including some very special American metal. Since the sale of his estate, many of his oddball cars have been spotted across the internet, and now this wacky example of a 1981 Mercedes-Benz 380SL has popped up for sale on the Barrett-Jackson website. We love a modified Mercedes-Benz, but we've never seen anything like this.

The car you see before you is based on the R107 series of Grand Touring SL models manufactured since 1971. During the 1980s, the Mercedes-Benz SL was the star of a number of TV shows and movies, which obviously grabbed the attention of Mr. Entertainment himself. But an ordinary SL wouldn't do for Mr. Newton; he needed something special.

This crazy-looking 1981 Mercedes-Benz 380SL was sent to Long Island coachbuilder and artisan Niko Sokol for a thorough makeover. As you can see by the pictures, Sokol didn't hold back on this project and created a beautifully sweeping design that completely changes the look of the car. Sokol also reworked the removable hardtop, and the headlamps were moved inboard. Each front fender got some added vents for engine cooling purposes, and in a classic 50s move resembling old Chrysler designs, the spare wheel is mounted to the rear decklid.

The glamorous trim adorning the side of the vehicle is plated in real gold, but the interior remains as stock as the day the car rolled off the production line. This beauty rolls on a set of original 16-inch BBS cross-lace wheels. Under the hood sits a 3.8-liter V8 engine sending power to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The car is in near perfect condition after living most of its life in a private museum. Bidding is currently open, so you'd better make your move.
