Ever wanted to buy a Dodge Charger pickup? Now you can.
Smyth Performance specialize in converting old Volkswagen Jettas into utes, but now the conversion company is turning its attentions to something a bit less mundane. If the hulking Dodge Ram is too imposing for you, Smyth Performance will now convert your V8 Dodge Charger into a pickup that packs both performance and practicality. Retailing for only $3,590, the extensive conversion process is built using a custom multi panel aluminium bed, but parts are sourced from other models that are easy to replace in order to ease the costs.
The tailgate, for example, is taken from a Ford F-150 to give it a rugged look, while the taillights, which were apparently the hardest parts to pick, are sourced from a Dodge Grand Caravan, the rear windshield is from a GM Colorado, and the rear quarter windows are similar to the Jetta's to give it a unique look. Additional work still needs to be done on the first demo unit based on a 2006 model Dodge Charger R/T, with plans to lower the suspension and fit it with some new 20-inch wheels, but other than that this initial example is mostly complete. Smyth Performance is now taking orders for the conversion, and each order is fully refundable.
The first Charger to get the ute treatment is fitted with a standard 5.7-liter V8 Hemi engine producing 340 horsepower and 390 lb-ft. Applying the conversion to the more menacing SRT Hellcat should be technically possible, but Smyth Performance hasn't confirmed if it will sell you one. Considering that FCA doesn't appear to be in a hurry to revive the dead Dakota anytime soon, this could be the closest you're going to get to owning a mid-sized Dodge pickup truck at this rate.
