One of the German manufacturer's greatest creations.
BMW launched something very special in 2011 and was taken by surprise by the higher than expected demand. The 1 Series M Coupe, aka the 1M, was the result of the M performance division being asked to turn the E82 1 Series coupe into an enthusiast machine, and a legend was born. The 1M, not to be mistaken with the also iconic M1 supercar from the late 1970s, came powered by the automaker's N54 3.0-liter engine rated at an impressive 335 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. An additional 37 lb-ft or so is available thanks to an overboost feature.
Zero to 62 mph takes just 4.9 seconds and only one gearbox was offered: a six-speed manual. Total curb weight came to just 3,296 pounds. The final result resonated so much with buyers that BMW ultimately decided to increase production from the originally planned 2,700 units to 6,309.
BMW sold every single one of them. The coupe's exterior was enhanced with various accessories such as new front and rear ends, unique wheels, and a widened stance. A special exhaust system was added, too. Not everyone found the exterior styling appealing. Some even compared it to an ugly bulldog, but no one could say the little coupe didn't deliver the performance and driving goods.
It received a number of awards in 2011 from the world's most influential publications and journalists, and collectors knew even then they were sitting on a very worthwhile investment. It's not especially difficult to find a 1M for sale in overall excellent condition with relatively low miles, but you'd better be prepared to pay up.
We found this example up for sale at Brooklyn Auto Sales with an asking price of $89,999. The base price of its successor, the BMW M2 and more powerful M2 CS, comes to around $60,000 and $84,000, respectively. Bear in mind this 1M comes with a number of modifications, such as a MOTIV 800 Single Turbo Kit, EOS Manifold, solid differential and subframe bushings, Revosport hood and trunk, and 19-inch BBS Fi Wheels. Total mileage: 19,605. It's also accident-free and appears to be in perfect condition inside and out based on the photos.
We don't know its post-modified performance capabilities but they're likely quite impressive. Despite the mods, which may not be appealing to everyone, this Valencia Orange 1M delivers the goods.
