Whether you're a fan of new convertibles or not, it's tough to admit that they're lots of fun to have in the summertime. There are plenty of great choices out there today, such as the drop top Mustang, Camaro and even the Mazda MX-5. But get this: there's another model that's currently outselling all of them. Like it or hate it, that car is the current Volkswagen Beetle Convertible. According to VW, about 6,500 Beetle drop tops were sold in the first five months of this year with over 2,000 in May alone.

Compared to other affordable alternatives, the Chevy Camaro Convertible sold about 5,500 units and the Chrysler 200 Convertible sold 5,400 units during that same period. Interestingly, VW has a Beetle Convertible competitor of its own, the Eos, but it only sold 2,000 examples this year. So why is the old Bugster drop top selling so well especially when compared to the significantly more powerful Camaro? VW is linking this sales success partly to a new Beetle print and online ad campaign along with traditional word of mouth.
