In the automotive industry there's a lot that goes on behind closed doors. While it may not seem like it, every automaker is gunning for the number one spot as the world's largest automaker. According to Bloomberg Business, Volkswagen has just surpassed Toyota as the largest automaker in the first six months of 2015. From January to June, Volkswagen sold 5.04 million vehicles, while Toyota sold 5.02 million units. General Motors, which is the third-biggest automaker, sold 4.86 million vehicles in the first six months of 2015.

Volkswagen was targeting 2018 as the year it would take over Toyota for the largest automaker, but these recent sales figures suggest it's ahead of schedule. With car sales plummeting in China, automakers are looking towards boosting sales in the US and European markets. The race between these two automakers is definitely going to heat up before the end of the year. But when it comes down to it, would you rather have a VW or a Toyota? These two automakers may rule the roads pretty soon.
