When automotive motoring outlets release their list of performance vehicles, enthusiasts usually listen. Who else has the ability to get eight of the greatest cars on the road today and drive them at ridiculously high speeds? Road & Track has just named the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R as the 2016 Performance Car of the Year. With its 5.2-liter V8 that produces an astonishing 526-hp we have a hard time believing that the muscle car was the underdog in the comparison.

The GT350R beat out some serious competition, including the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Mercedes-AMG GT S, Porsche Cayman GT4, Ferrari 488 GTB and more. According to Larry Webster Editor-In-Chief Of Road & Track, the GT350R is much more than a modified Mustang. "With a flat-plane crank and Sport Cup 2 tires, the GT350R is a Mustang turned up to 11," stated Webster. "It's a car you can't help but love." With the result, the GT350R joins some incredible company, which includes last year's Porsche 911 GT3 and Chevrolet C7 Corvette in 2013. Overall, it's a great time for American automakers, since three out of the four finalists were from the United States.
