It's not unusual to see cars sharing parts, especially when those cars fall under the GM umbrella. The company is so hell-bent on saving costs, that it plans to have just four platforms by 2025, and you can bet your last buck that there are a mass of parts shared between models that we are completely unaware of. A recent example of parts-sharing has the internet in stitches, and has left Corvette C8 owners scratching their heads: the C8 has a diesel glow plug light on its dashboard, and we highly doubt it's because Chevy is planning to introduce a diesel engine to the Corvette anytime soon.

This oddity recently came to light on a Reddit post where one user showed a picture of what looks like a new C8's instrument panel. In the image, one can make out the glow plug light, but there's no mention of the symbol in the Corvette owners manual.

So what exactly is a glow plug? Diesel vehicles such as the Silverado 2500HD (when optioned with the 445 hp/910 lb-ft 6.6-liter Duramax V8 diesel engine) need glow plugs to introduce heat into the combustion chamber as diesel engines use compression, instead of a spark plug to cause combustion. The point is, you'll never come across a gas-powered car with glow plugs.

According to GM, the dash icon appears on the C8 because the cluster is planned on being reused on other models, some of which might come with a diesel powertrain. "That symbol was included as part of our standardization process as we consider component sharing. It is not indicative of any plans to add the feature to Corvette and we plan to remove the icon in the future." said Kevin M. Kelly, GM Senior Manager of Product and Brand Communications. We know it would be ridiculous to expect GM to build a diesel Corvette, but after this discovery, you best believe that someone is already looking into the logistics of making this crazy engine swap a reality.
