Will Lamborghini Ever Build An SUV Smaller Than The Urus?

Or is one SUV model enough?

When Porsche revealed its first SUV, the Cayenne, many people said it would be the death of the company. Not only has Porsche survived, it has thrived. Now other sports carmakers are discovering the importance of building an SUV - including Lamborghini. The company dabbled in the market with LM002, but the new Urus is the company’s first mainstream SUV. Porsche has since expanded its SUV portfolio with the smaller Macan, so could Lamborghini do the same?

Speaking to Drive at the launch event for the Urus, Lamborghini’s Chief Technical Officer, Maurizio Reggiani, revealed that the company would not build a smaller SUV model. “At the end, it is all about brand positioning, and you can go too far down and dilute the position that we are the pinnacle of the car business,” he said. “I think the position today of the Urus is perfect and at this moment this is the bottom of our parameters.” So, Lamborghini will not build a smaller SUV based on the Macan, but Reggiani did drop some hints of future Urus models.

The current Urus likely won’t be the most powerful model. “I think we have this base which is fantastic, and we can say that we will have a long derivative strategy like we’ve had from Gallardo onwards and this will be the same applied to Urus,” Reggiani said. The possibilities are endless here. Lamborghini could do a lighter Urus Superleggera, or even add more power through hybridization. All we know is, the Urus won’t be getting a baby brother.
