Is the McLaren 570S a high-end sports car, or is it a supercar? It's a tricky question and we've determined that it lies somewhere in between, offering daily driving comfort as well as high octane performance. Doesn't matter whether you go for the coupe or the new spider or, heck, the glass-roofed GT. The 570S is part of McLaren's new Sport Series, its so-called entry level offering. We don't see anything entry level about it, considering one of its main competitors is the always formidable Porsche 911 Turbo.

In this latest episode of Motor Trend's Ignition, host Jethro Bovingdon is handed the keys to a brand new 570S Spider. Of course he heads north to some of the UK's finest driving roads. Welcome to the Scottish countryside. With the familiar twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 parked behind the driver, there's a total of 562 hp on hand.

Don't automatically assume that because of its folding two-piece hardtop performance is sacrificed; it's not. The 204 mph top speed (with the roof closed) is identical to that of the coupe. Prefer the roof lowered at high speeds? No problem. You can go up to 196 mph topless. McLaren rightly expects the 570S Spider to become its best-selling model, and there's no reason why it won't. Smashing good looks. Blistering performance. Wind in your hair experience? The 911 Turbo cabrio may have finally met its match.
