The Tesla referral program is trying to drum up sales in a rather unique way.
Tesla is offering a brand-new car via its referral program to generate more interest and sales. Existing owners are being incentivized to get their friends and family to purchase a new Tesla vehicle before September 30, 2023. Those who are successful will be entered into a draw to win a Model 3 Performance, which is motivation enough for almost anyone.
Here's how it works. Suppose you refer a friend and convince them to purchase a Tesla, and they take delivery of that car before September 30, 2023. In that case, you are automatically entered into a competition to win a range-topping model 3. If none of your friends are interested, current and previous Tesla customers can enter themselves by taking delivery of a new Tesla before the posted date.
This is probably a way for Tesla to get rid of older stock before the MY2024 vehicles roll in.
If you want to get your hands on the Model 3 Performance prize ride, there are a few rules to follow. Firstly, the order has to be placed between September 19 - 30 using your referral link. The customer must also take delivery of the EV during that time, which doesn't give customers much time to think about the purchase and look at competitor cars.
Unfortunately, Tesla says the offer is only available for US-based customers but excludes Florida, New York, and Rhode Island residents for an unspecified reason. To increase their chances of winning, Tesla customers can spend their referral credits to receive additional entries via the Tesla app.
The winner of the Model 3 Performance will be announced later this year. The automaker hasn't said whether the vehicle is a pre-or post-facelift model, but we're guessing Tesla will want to get rid of an older model.
Tesla previously shut down the referral program but revived it in November last year. The unique program has been used to give away cars on several occasions. In 2019, the automaker offered 1,000 miles of free Supercharging to each Tesla owner who referred a new customer to the brand. Moreover, each referral gave owners a chance to win a new Roadster.
Several people have reportedly received confirmation that they will get a Roadster when it arrives. Tesla has confirmed that the rapid electric speedster will enter production in late 2024.
The automaker recently culled the most affordable Model Y trim level, meaning buyers can no longer purchase a sub-$50,000 Tesla crossover. The official website says the cheapest Model Y is now $50,490 before incentives. We expect a facelifted Model Y to arrive in the coming months, with updates similar to those seen on the refreshed Model 3.
