The US is home to some of the best drag racing in the world, and over the years has become a Mecca for fast JDM cars. When one thinks of fast Japanese sports cars, popular models such as the Toyota Supra, Nissan Skyline GT-R, and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution spring to mind, but there are some rarer breeds also making headlines. One such car is the second-generation W20 Toyota MR2 of BoostedBoiz fame. Kyle and his crew are best known for building incredibly fast Hondas, but their recent exploits with this Toyota have been making internet headlines for all the right reasons: it's the fastest of its kind in the world.

We previously featured a second-generation MR2 that dipped into the eight-second range, but the BoostedBoys team has gone far beyond that, posting the first-ever seven-second quarter-mile run in an MR2. The crew stuck to what they knew best when building this car and opted for a K-Series Honda engine. This engine has been fully built and features a turbo large enough to swallow toddlers and small dogs. Dyno runs of this car have shown consistent power levels above 1,000 hp to the wheels. When the build first started back in 2016, Kyle and the team had no idea that five years later they would be sitting with a record-breaking car.

"The goal at the beginning of the builds was for it to be our first eight-second car, our first car to make over 1,000 hp, and to do sick wheelies," says Kyle. The first setup ran twin-turbos and made 1045 horsepower. This finally managed an 8.87-second quarter-mile run back in October of 2020. Fast forward to 2021, and the car is running a bigger single Precision turbo, making more power, and keeping its wheelies under better control. Kyle set the record last week with a time of 7.982 seconds at a crazy 181.94 mph after managing a mid-eight-second run on the new setup. Since it's a relatively new build, there's still lots of potential to go deeper into the sevens.
