With the Tesla Roadster continuously delayed, other electric supercar makers are stealing the spotlight. Customer deliveries for the Rimac Nevera are expected to start by the end of this year, yet the production version of the Tesla Roadster still hasn't been revealed. According to Elon Musk, the Tesla Roadster has been delayed until at least 2023. And now there's another new electric supercar on the horizon from India.

It's called the Ekonk, a new electric supercar in development by Vazirani Automotive. If the company sounds familiar, Vazirani revealed the Shul concept, India's first-ever supercar, at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

But whereas the Shul was a turbine-electric supercar designed to run on gasoline, the Ekonk is fully electric. Since revealing the Shul, Vazirani has been working on unique battery technology that makes electric cars lighter and safer while increasing the range. To showcase the technology, the Ekonk is powered by two electric motors generating a combined 722 horsepower. Vazirani claims the Ekonk is "India's fastest electric supercar," but no performance specs have been revealed.

Offsetting the weight of electric motors and batteries is one of the biggest challenges supercar manufacturers face when optimizing the performance, but Vazirani says the Ekonk weighs only 1,627 pounds.

This results in a near-perfect one-to-one power to weight ratio, so it should be a joy to drive. To put this into perspective, the Ekonk weighs around 700 pounds less than a Mazda MX-5 Miata, which is staggeringly light for an electric vehicle. To save as much weight as possible and achieve this seemingly insanely light figure, the Ekonk will take the form of a single-seater track car, so passengers won't be able to come along for the ride.

A teaser image showcases the Ekonk's rear profile, bulging fenders, and thin taillight strips. We'll hopefully find out Vazirani's secret to making electric cars lighter when the Ekonk is revealed later this month.
