Road trips are about to get much more social.
These are the first images of the new XchangE autonomous driving concept that Swiss manufacturer Rinspeed will debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. Featuring a cutting-edge steer-by-wire system, the fully-electric concept aims to put occupants at the center of the car. Rinspeed claims "Not even flying is better!" referring to the business-class style seating that boasts elaborate functionality enabling passengers to convert the cabin into a lounge area.
Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht said of the concept: "So far hardly anyone has taken this to its logical conclusion from the perspective of the driver. After all, travelling in a driverless car will no longer require me to stare at the road, but will let me spend my time in a more meaningful way." Thanks to new safety and entertainment features, passengers can watch a movie or browse the web while the autonomous electric sedan drives itself at speeds of up to 75 mph. With the steering wheel positioned in the middle of the dash courtesy of the steer-by-wire tech used on modern aircrafts, passenger space isn't intruded upon.
