Back in 2017, Volkswagen decided it would no longer sell the Touareg SUV in the United States. Say what you will about the Touareg - it was too expensive, it didn't have a third row, or it wasn't reliable enough - but this humble SUV became the groundwork upon which the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, and Lamborghini Urus were all built upon, so there's no denying its importance. There is an all-new Touareg now on sale in Europe with an awesome tri-turbo diesel V8 but it won't be coming to the US now that the more affordable three-row Atlas exists.

Volkswagen hasn't offered a "new" Touareg since 2017 but we decided to do some digging on the internet. As it turns out, there are still plenty of brand-new Touaregs sitting on dealer lots just waiting for buyers. Some of them with pretty big discounts.

Even though it is 2019 and there are already 2020 models arriving at dealers, there are still over 40 Touaregs from 2017 and even 2016 still sitting around. In 2017, the base price of a new Touareg V6 Sport with the technology package was $49,495. For that price, you'd get a 3.6-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque sending power to all-wheel-drive through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

We were shocked to see several dealerships selling their Touareg inventory at or near its original MSRP - perhaps they simply don't want to get rid of them. Don't let this discourage you because other dealers are desperately trying to get these things off the lot with massive discounts.

The least expensive example we saw was marked from $51,050 down to $34,370. That's around two-thirds of its original value for what we've often referred to as the greatest SUV of all time. Now that VW has fixed all Dieselgate-related issues with its 3.0-liter V6 TDI engines, we even found a few 2016 model Toureg TDI models for sale with around $10,000 off MSRP. The diesel Touareg packs a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with 240 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque with over 7,700 pounds of towing capacity. Even though the Toureg is officially gone, it's not too late to go buy what is a seriously good SUV.
