You'll Never Guess Who Built This Amazing Interior

With no front passenger seat, the options are endless.

What could you do if the front passenger seat was removed from a car’s interior? That’s a question Volvo has apparently asked – and answered – with the reveal of the XC90 Lounge Console concept at the Shanghai Auto Show this week. Aimed to satisfy the “unmet needs” of buyers with “a high-profile lifestyle,” the Lounge Console is “the ultimate executive accessory” that replaces the front passenger seat with something so much better.

“Removing the passenger seat enabled us to create an open space that dramatically changes the dynamics of the interior and led to a firework of ideas and new possibilities,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group.

The result is the Lounge Console, a large work table that houses a vanity mirror and storage tray for passenger’s jewelry and wads of cash, as well as an area for shoes under the cushioned leg rest. Rotate the table 90 degrees, and the console powers forward while revealing a 17-inch media screen offering a “full in-car theater experience.”Whether Volvo plans to roll this out as an option on future cars remains to be seen.
