The Ram Power Wagon starts off life as a standard RAM 2500 and adds a whole lot of off-road extras as well as the most powerful V8 engine in the range to create a serious pick-up with a lot of attitude and class-leading all-terrain ability. 2017 sees some changes to trim and a few upgrades to the interior.
Massive off-road tires and a fully uprated suspension and undercarriage are all intended to get the Power Wagon over treacherous terrain with the minimum of hassle. With its low-range setting it can crawl over just about anything that its ride-height will clear and few other vehicles in its class can match it for its all-terrain abilities.
Handling, braking and general road holding when on the beaten track are better than you might expect for such a heavy and clearly off-road focused vehicle and an imprecise steering rack is the only real black mark here.
Despite the lack of an available air suspension as in some other trim levels, the Power Wagon rides remarkably well on-road, its softer spring and damper settings absorb most rough road surfaces with ease.
Other than its serious all-terrain hardware, the Power Wagon’s other main drawcard is its 410 horsepower 6.4-liter V8. Allied to 429 lb-ft of torque a 6-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels.
Despite a curb weight of over 7000 pounds the Power Wagon powers its way to 60 mph in just over 8-seconds. A very competitive time for this type of vehicle but not quite in the league of the ballistic Ford F-150 Raptor.
The big Hemi V8 comes with a multi-displacement cylinder deactivation system but it does little to satiate the big wagons serious thirsty for gasoline, thankfully, a 31-gallon fuel tank will help you avoid having to stop at every gas station on your route. EPA figures are not available but expect very low double digit figures in normal driving conditions.
The Ram Power Wagon comes standard with remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, auto-dimming rearview mirror, power heated mirrors, 17-inch wheels, a split front bench and split-folding rear seats, 5-inch touchscreen display, 6-speaker audio system and USB.
The Power Wagon is rated to tow 9790-lb comes prewired for towing and also has a 12,000-lb capacity front electric winch. Heavy duty engine cooling, a transfer case and fuel tank skid plate add to its go-anywhere capabilities.
Safety is taken care of by airbags both front and rear, hill descent control, trailer brake control and an electronic stability system.
Notable available packages include the all-inclusive Leather and Luxury Group which offers power heated front seats, 9-speaker audio system, leather interior, 8.4-inch touchscreen and a reversing camera, and the Convenience Group which adds an automatic high beam headlamp and rain sensitive windshield wipers.
