Despite exciting products like the GR86 and upcoming GR Corolla, Toyota's sweet spot still seems to be selling tens of thousands of inoffensive, slightly bland, yet utterly sensible SUVs and sedans. The Camry and RAV4 are prime examples, and the same can be said of the Corolla Cross. Essentially a jacked-up Corolla, the Cross has now been upgraded with a hybrid powertrain. Producing 194 horsepower, it is quite a bit more powerful than the slothful gas-only Corolla Cross and promises exceptional fuel efficiency. You probably won't turn back to look at your 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid in the driveway, but you'll sleep soundly knowing that years of fuss-free motoring lie ahead.

When Is The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Coming Out?

Revealed in early June, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid's exact release date is unknown but we expect it to be coming out in the USA before the end of 2022.

What’s The Price Of The 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid?

The price of the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is unknown, but we expect it to carry a slight premium over the gas-only model. The 2022 Corolla Cross LE starts at just under $25,000, so we expect the base Corolla Cross LE to cost about $28,000 MSRP.

Rivals will include the Honda HR-V and Kia Seltos, although hybrid versions of these models are not currently sold in the United States A rival that does have a hybrid option is the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. The Corolla Cross's price will likely overlap with the excellent Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, a vehicle with more power and a much more adventurous design.

New Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Exterior And Colors

The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid's exterior introduces few surprises compared with its gas-only sibling. Overall, the look is still one of a restrained family crossover. It's clearly modern, but few would describe it as remotely sexy. For the Sport grades, Toyota has attempted to inject some sportiness into the look of the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid with unique front/rear styling, two-tone paint, and available 18-inch alloy wheels. The grille section is unique, as are the headlight's details.

The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid's colors include Wind Chill Pearl, Jet Black Mica, Cypress, Sonic Silver Metallic, Barcelona Red Metallic, and Blue Crush Metallic. For SE and XSE models, the two-tone combinations include a black roof paired with Acidic Blast, Sonic Silver, Barcelona Red, or Blue Crush.

Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Dimensions

We don't expect much difference at all between the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid's dimensions and those of its gas-only sibling, although the manufacturer has yet to publish details of the new hybrid. We know that the standard Corolla Cross measures 64.8 inches in height, 175.6 inches in length, and 71.9 inches in width. Gas-only models start at 3,125 pounds, but the hybrid is likely to be about 150 lbs heavier.

Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Engine And Performance

The new Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid's engine has better specs than the standard Corolla Cross thanks to the electric assistance. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and electric hybrid system combine for 194 hp, a welcome increase from the gas-only model's 169 hp. Toyota claims a 0-60 mph time of eight seconds, usefully quicker than the non-hybrid Cross, which needs over nine seconds to complete the run.

All-wheel drive is standard, and a continuously variable transmission that should maximize efficiency is used. Driven in an unhurried fashion and making use of the solid TNGA-C platform, the new Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid SUV should be perfect for daily commuting around the city. Only higher highway speeds and a fully loaded cabin are likely to expose the modest outputs.

Gas Mileage

EPA ratings are still pending but Toyota claims that the Cross Hybrid will return gas mileage of 37 mpg combined. That's 7 mpg more than the Corolla Cross with AWD. If the Corolla Cross Hybrid has the same 13.2-gallon gas tank, it will be capable of a range of over 480 miles. We don't know what size the Corolla Cross Hybrid's battery is but any significant driving on electric power alone is unlikely. Not yet available as a plug-in, the Corolla Hybrid will recharge from brake regeneration.

Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Interior And Cargo

Like the exterior, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid's interior isn't particularly exciting to look at. The build quality is solid, though, and the controls inside the cabin are logically sited and easy to use. Standard for 2023 is the Toyota Multimedia System that includes wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and added USB-C ports.

Voice controls and a touch-sensitive display are standard, and the system can be updated over the air. A Wi-Fi hotspot and cloud-based navigation are available.

The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid's seats start with straightforward fabric on the LE, but the XLE and XSE both have SofTex upholstery. Ventilation outlets are standard for rear-seat passengers, and dual-zone climate control and a power moonroof are available as options. The Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite takes care of safety with features like pre-collision warning, lane departure alert, and dynamic radar cruise control.

The non-hybrid Corolla Cross AWD has 24.3 cubic feet of volume behind the second row, so the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid's cargo capacity should be similar to that.
