2021 Land Rover Range Rover Review: Half A Century Of Off-Road Luxury

The 2021 Range Rover SUV takes the luxury SUV battle to rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7 while remaining an alternative to luxury sedans, as well. It's been fifty years since Land Rover launched its first Range Rover in 1970. The fourth generation of this iconic luxury 5-door SUV has been around since 2013 and still cuts the mustard in a highly competitive class. Gas, diesel, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid EV drivetrains are offered, starting at 255 horsepower and ending with a 557-hp V8 that delivers storming performance. Towing capacity peaks at over 7,700 pounds. While the current generation is getting long in the tooth, the nameplate is commemorating its half-century in style with a limited-edition model that we also review here, along with some other changes to see the 2021 model through another year.

Verdict: Is the 2021 Land Rover Range Rover A Good SUV?

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover still subscribes to the original's brief of transporting passengers off-road in luxury and comfort. It has the quality, design, and customization options to give it a bespoke air and, unlike most rivals, it can actually go off-road. It looks like a classic Range Rover SUV and its iconic design stands out in the car park. However, modern rivals such as the Bentley Bentayga provide a better blend of comfort and on-road handling and the Range Rover shows its age in this regard. Its reliability ratings aren't great either and neither the NHTSA nor IIHS have a review of the 2021 Land Rover Range Rover, so no safety rating is available. It's unlikely to match new-generation rivals, though.

The roaring gas V8 is probably a dying breed but it has an irresistible charm. It's not unlike piloting a powerboat when you dispense its ample power and the prow lifts, sending the Rangie down the road at an indecent speed. It's very heavy on fuel, but this is unlikely to matter at this end of the market and the V8 not only offers all the power, bottom-end torque, and throaty burble that owners will enjoy, but stays true to the original Range Rover's engine format.

What Range Rover Model Should I Buy?

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover SUV price list starts at $92,000 in the US, but the most exciting model, the V8 LWB Autobiography, costs $151,000. It elevates the driving experience with its high level of luxury appointments that even includes a 29-speaker Meridian audio system and 24-way electrically adjustable, heated and ventilated front seats. This model gets the full list of off-road credentials and options, too, including a locking rear differential. On top of that, its powerful V8 provides the soundtrack and motivation that befit a top-end luxury SUV like the Range Rover. It's the most complete car in the range and the aspirational choice, but we would be remiss if we failed to mention that the plug-in hybrid makes it excellent if sensibility has to prevail. You won't feel short-changed opting for it.
